Description
With minimal direction from a senior licensed architect, analyze client needs and utilize independent thinking to develop concepts and approaches and refine them into design solutions for science & technology research centers, laboratories, institutional, healthcare, higher education, libraries, federal training facilities, aviation, multistory mixed use, retail, corporate interiors, open space planning for spec buildings and master planning projects including renovation and new construction; expedite concept development and document production for fast paced projects and execute programming and management of all phases of architectural and interior design and construction administration to include coordination of all engineering disciplines for new construction, expansion, and tenant improvement; develop furniture standards and color, material, finish selection, finish boards and finish binders; coordinate with furniture vendors and manufacturers to incorporate furniture manufacturer’s systems; site survey of existing conditions and take as built measurements; coordinate input from multiple project architects and designers to translate into site plans and building documents; analyze as built plans, photographs, notes, and other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues; provide research, planning, and design solutions, applying knowledge of design, construction procedures, ADA, zoning and building codes compliance and building materials; incorporate sustainable design principles and best practices of green construction to provide excellent value and design; LEED documentation; coordinate with all engineering disciplines, signage, acoustic, waste management, curtain wall, façade maintenance, special systems and vertical transportation consultants to incorporate engineering systems into unified design for client and agency review and approval; evaluate client/ program and site and discuss diagrammatic process with client and user groups to solicit feedback; participate in project team discussions and client meetings to provide recommendations; production of conceptual presentations; using Revit BIM Software, SketchUp, Architectural Desktop, Vectorworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Microsoft Office, programming and exploration of design options with the and post occupancy operations and maintenance; communicate architectural design concepts; perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications; perform QA/QC reviews; assist the marketing team in proposals and marketing documents for RFP’s & RFQ’s; manage project data and transmission and all electronic communications using Deltek or other approved software; assist the Project Manager in establishing task schedule and manpower requirements consistent with the project agreement; assist in managing project consultant agreements and project budgets; assist in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; conduct site reconnaissance/ investigations, onsite charettes, reports and production of documents to meet client standards and produce specification documents for both military and civilian projects; coordinate construction in accordance with the contract documents to include FF&E installation; respond to requests for information (RFI’s), clarifications, conduct site visits and progress meetings, prepare field observation reports, final inspections, and project closeout, including punch lists and record drawings; review and prepare certificates of substantial completion, occupancy, and final completion; and conduct post-occupancy review of clients’ use of space and site.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or foreign equivalent plus five years progressive experience (or Master of Architecture or foreign equivalent plus three year experience) plus LEED AP with BD+C and registered architect in Georgia & Florida. Experience to include conceptual design and programming as well as master planning through SD/ DD/ CD/ CA and post occupancy evaluation for science & technology research centers, laboratories, institutional, healthcare, higher education, libraries, federal training facilities, multistory mixed use, retail, corporate interiors, open space planning for spec buildings and master planning projects, including renovation and new construction; meeting with user groups to evaluate their needs, research similar project types and incorporate evidence based design; creating design concepts for projects and individual spaces and producing 3D massing studies or quick free hand sketches for discussion; evaluating client/ program and site and discussing diagrammatic process with client and user groups to solicit feedback; recommending building systems, materials and best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design; incorporating LEED sustainable design principles; conducting site reconnaissance/ investigations, onsite charettes, reports and production of documents for all project types; using BIM Software, SketchUp, Architectural Desktop, Vectorworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Microsoft Office package for initial concept modeling, programming and exploration of design options to communicate architectural design concepts; coordinating all engineering disciplines and post occupancy operations and maintenance; building physical models for design development and presentations; managing and coordinating project from client meetings, all design phases & CA; performing QA/QC reviews; assisting marketing team in proposals and marketing documents; preparing project documents in necessary software to respond to contractor, consultant and client requests; conducting site visits and progress meetings, preparing field observation reports, final inspections, and project closeout, including punch lists and record drawings; reviewing and preparing certificates of substantial completion, occupancy, and final completion; and conducting post-occupancy evaluation and review of clients’ use of space.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Marketing / Business Development
§ Responsible for the development and execution of the regional business unit and managing business unit’s S + T Practice marketing strategy; as well as the overall branding and development of HOK’s S + T national practice.
§ Identifies new business opportunities while developing current client relationships. Listen for and seek out new projects which may exist or are being formulated.
§ Participates in selected marketing and business development opportunities and presentations.
§ Develops and nurtures positive client relationships.
§ Develops and maintains positive relationships with consultants, contractors and jurisdictional/approval agencies to increase stature in the market and community resulting in increased potential business opportunities.
§ Assists marketing department in development of marketing campaigns, materials, webinars, etc. and overall proposal preparation.
§ Assists in preparation of award submittals.
§ Assists in the preparation of press releases and other materials publicizing S + T projects.

Design Leadership
§ Conducts research and seeks thorough understanding of client needs for planning requirements and design solution opportunities.
§ Engages clients in explorations that respectfully challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
§ Communicates design intent in a clear and compelling way; demonstrates the incorporation of client’s requirements and goals within design solution.
§ Assists in the preparation and delivery of design presentations to clients and drives consultant work to achieve design goals.
§ Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.

Practice / Project Management
§ Provide strategic vision, as well as day-to-day administration of the S + T Group.
§ Responsible for development and successful execution of practice goals, business plan and profitability; aligns efforts with regional and national business unit plans and goals.
§ Responsible for conceptual design excellence; initiates project design concepts and idea discussions, provides guidance to design teams during project design development.
§ Supervises and may assist with the production of drawings and documents that convey the design intent.
§ Implements and utilizes HOK Best Practices for all projects and processes. Personally contributes to HOK Best Practices through new procedure initiation and development.
§ Assists in preparing fee and workload projections for assigned projects.
§ Works closely with project managers with respect to budget and schedule constraints.
§ Utilizes and encourages best uses of design technology for presentation and production purposes; champions BIM and Revit technologies.
§ Assists others with project deadlines as available.
§ Maintains an appropriate billable and non-billable percentage of personal and departmental time.
§ Conducts project technical and design reviews.

Staff Development
§ Acts as mentor by coaching and motivating design teams and individuals; fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust among members of the group as it grows and develops.
§ Prepares and delivers design staff evaluations; responsible for performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department.
§ Supports diversity, HOKU programs and develops continuing education opportunities (e.g. site visits, lectures, road trips) to expose design staff to influences which will stimulate design creativity and innovation.
§ Participates in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
§ Encourages staff exploration and innovation to achieve design excellence and continual improvement.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
§ Participates in local or state professional associations, maintains active membership, and attends conferences valued by clients as appropriate. Public speaking and/or publishing may be required.
§ Participates with other Directors of S + T in HOK firm-wide activities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
§ Bachelor’s degree in Architecture required, Master’s degree in Architecture preferred.
§ More than 10 years planning and design experience of various type technology projects, with at least 2 years within a management/leadership role.
§ Published and/or award winning projects a plus.
§ Registered Architect with current license required.
§ NCARB registration preferred.
§ LEED Green Associate Accreditation required (within twelve months of employment); LEED AP preferred.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
§ Demonstrated creativity, passion and interest in design and planning of science + technology focused facilities.
§ Demonstrated experience in science + technology focused facilities such as: educational, institutional (government agency or public health), corporate or bio-medical facilities (or any combination thereof) required.
§ Advanced knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for laboratory design and science facilities.
§ Advanced knowledge of laboratory programming delivery and how design impacts those systems -including space, operational, and equipment programming, as well as casework, MEP and structural systems.

Job Specifications:
Successful candidate manage the design of building and facility mechanical systems for a variety of industrial, educational, institutional, governmental projects. Such systems include HVAC and energy systems of various types and sizes, temperature controls and energy management as well as plumbing, piping and fire protection systems. Have a thorough command of chillers, boiler, steam systems, control systems, ancillary central plant system, utilities and industrial ventilation systems. The candidate will coordinate and manage design projects, perform system analysis and complete studies, utility master plans, modeling and analyses, conceptual and detailed designs and construction phase engineering support.

Skills and Qualifications
We require a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; P.E. license and a minimum of 12 years experience in designing and analyzing complete mechanical systems in buildings. The ability to create innovative design concepts and to manage technical and commercial project elements from proposal phase through design and construction phase supports is a must. The candidate must be available for routine travel to client / project locations within the US and occasional international travel is to be expected. LEED and/or CEM accreditation are preferred. REVIT/AutoCAD Coordinator

Responsibilities:
•Build and maintain company standards based upon the input from senior staff members and current company drafting standards.
•Create and maintain templates for various types of projects that can be utilized at project startup. These templates will include the company standards for filters, Revit familes, etc.
•Provide support for Revit users in all offices.
•Manage, create and maintain BIM content and Families.
•Openly communicate with design teams to ensure they are applying best practices and following company guidelines from both a technical and procedural perspective.
•Work with project teams during project to resolve any application or file based issues
•Create and update the MEP central file for Revit projects using model received from the client. This responsibility includes:
◦Removing unwanted architectural items from the model.
◦Incorporating the company standard template into the MEP central file.
◦Invoking worksets for the various disciplines.
◦Establishing drafting views for each discipline.
◦Distributing and updating the central file to the design team.
◦Copying/Monitoring any levels, grids, etc. within the architectural model.
